Wood firing in a smokeless kiln”

Mazakazu Kusakabe is a master of traditional Japanese Raku and he is known worldwide for his outstanding achievements in the smokeless woodkilns building .

The technique of wood firing provides a high quality glazing , using traditional recipes and gives an exceptional result.

Vallauris earned  the nickname of “black city”   due, to the now lost tradition of woodfiring using very large furnaces scattered throughout the city.

Master Kusakabe has developed a technique that allows the total carbon combustion to end before the smoke leaves the exhaust duct of the chimney. This characteristic  avoids pollution and permits construction in the city.

He built these special kilns everywhere in the world ( Asia, Europe, United States …).

Many  renowned American Universities appealed to him. For example, Harvard, in the heart of the city of Boston, now, has a huge  smokeless wood-fired kiln built by Masakazu Kusakabe.

For the first time in France, the legendary master will build his kiln and he chose our center for this achievement.

You will create some traditional pieces and glaze them according to traditional Japanese recipes. We will use the “just built” kiln for a wood firing.

A tea ceremony will be organized at the end of the workshop.
